"Het Puttertje" originally occurs along the sunny edges of moist deciduous forests. Not so long ago, putters have started to adapt to man-made landscapes such as orchards and parks. The most important condition for the presence of putters is a rich vegetation with many composites (thistles, dandelions). These plants produce the seeds of which the putter is almost entirely dependent.
But of course "Het Puttertje" is also world-famous because of the painting in the Mauritshuis by Johan Fabritius.
